Hackers broke into the U.S. government data. 4 million records are stolen.

U.S. officials said on Thursday 04 June 2015 that hackers broke into U.S. government computers. The personal data of about 4 million current and former federal employees was compromised. The data breach could potentially affect every federal agency. The US investigators were probing that the culprits were based in China.

Cyber investigators said a "foreign entity or government" was believed to be behind the cyber attack. Authorities were looking into a possible Chinese connection. The FBI said it was investigating and aimed to bring to account those responsible. Investigators suspect that hackers based in China are responsible for the attack, though the probe is continuing. On Thursday, several U.S. officials described the breach as among the largest known thefts of government data in history.

From a Chinese Embassy spokesman in Washington said hypothetical accusations were irresponsible and counterproductive. He said it was hard to track hacker activity across borders. China’s foreign ministry, the cabinet’s information office and the Cyberspace Administration didn’t respond to requests for comment. In response to previous allegations of Chinese hacking and cyber-espionage, Beijing has said that China is also a target of hacking attacks from overseas.

There was no comment from the White House.

The Office of Personnel Management responded that it had implemented additional security precautions for its networks. It said it would notify the 4 million employees and offer credit monitoring and identity theft services to those affected.

The Office of Personnel Management is the human resources department for the federal government, and it conducts background checks for security clearances. The OPM conducts more than 90% of federal background investigations, according to its website.
