There is quite easy and reliable way to disable the Microsoft Upload Center.
How to disable/get rid of Microsoft Upload Center? Solution 2.
If you don't want to repeat this action every time you restart Windows, you'll need another approach.
The Upload Center loaded when a program called MSOSYNC.EXE runs every time Windows starts. The simplest way to prevent this is to find and rename MSOSYNC.EXE to MSOSYNC.NO (it's in the folder where Office 14 is installed, in the Office 14 subfolder.) Do that, restart Windows and the Upload Center won't be there any longer.
On my computer this file located in the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
If some time you want it back, you can always rename MSOSYNC.NO back to MSOSYNC.EXE and restart Windows or run SharePoint Workspace to start it up again.
Also, the Upload Center might still re-appear if you reinstall Office or install a service pack; either would probably install a new copy of MSOSYNC.EXE to replace the "missing" one. So do not be surprised if you will see this little orange icon in your task bar again.
How to disable/get rid of Microsoft Upload Center? Solution 3.
So what is the third approach to disable Microsoft Upload Center?
You can edit the registry to get rid of Upload Center. Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and rename or delete the OfficeSyncProcess entry that points to the current location of MSOSYNC.EXE.
Again, reinstalling or updating Office will probably re-create the registry setting. And so will running SharePoint Workspace.
Of the two approaches, we'd recommend renaming MSOSYNC.EXE: Solution 2. It avoids the danger of editing the registry so this way is safe from the point of stability of your system.
If you still prefer editing registry, make backup of the registry record before you edit it. It may save you from potential troubles.
Also: you could delete any shortcuts to SharePoint Workspac too. It will ensure that you don't accidentally run it again.
If you will need the SharePoint Workspace, you can always go to the Office 14 folder and run GROOVE.EXE.
