When you install the Virtual Server software, you will have some administration tools available to manage your Virtual Server software. One of the tools is a web based administration tool. This web site allow you to manage virtual machines (create virtual machines, start/stop each of them etc).
To access the administration website, open Internet Explorer and type the following URL:
http:///VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1
Remember to replace the with your actual computer name. The admin site looks like the following:
In the above image, john represents the host computer name.
The left panel gives you several menu options to manage virtual machines. On the right panel, you will see 2 blocks:
1. The list of virtual machines. In the above screenshot, the panel with the title 'john Status' is the list of created virtual machines (In the screenshot, there is no virtual machine listed.)
2. The recent activities. It is just a log of recent activities you performed using the admin tool.
In the next few chapters you will learn how to create virtual machines using the admin software.
This chapter explains how to create virtual machines using Virtual Server software.
After you successfully install the Virtual Server software, the next step is to create the virtual machines. You can create any number of virtual machines depending upon the resource availability on your host computer.
Steps to create virtual machines
1. Launch the admin website
You can start the admin web site by accessing the windows start menu: Start > Programs > Microsoft Virtual Server > Virtual Server Administration
Alternatively, you can type the URL in Internet Explorer: http:///VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1
2. Create Virtual machine
You can create a new Virtual Machine by selecting the menu option Virtual Machines > Create.
Specify the following parameters to create a new virtual machine:
Virtual Machine Name
Give any name you like (like DevServer1, DevServer2, QAServer1 etc). Include the full path so that the virtual machine settings file and virtual hard disk will be created in an easily accessible folder in your host computer.
Example: C:\MyVirtualMachines\DevServer1
If you do not specify the full path, the file will be stored in the default location (Documents & Settings folder)
Memory
Specify the amount of memory you want to reserve for the new virtual machine. The maximum limit depends upon the available memory on the host computer. Make sure you give sufficient memory for the virtual machine to run efficiently (512MB, for example). When you are running a virtual machine, the specified amount of memory will be used from the host computer.
