Captain the cockatoo, living in Auckland Zoo since 1990. Captain is an absolute star at the Zoo.
Captain is a male sulphur crested cockatoo, who was donated to Auckland Zoo in 1990. The "sulphur" in their name refers to the bright yellow plumage on their crest and feathers - it's a very similar colour to the yellow colouring of crystallised sulphur. Captain has a strong personality and can be very cheeky at times.
Captain can talk and repeat certain phrases. He enjoys human interaction. Being part of the parrot family, some facts about sulphur crested cockatoos: 1. Can live up to 100 years old 2. Zygodactyl feet – 2 toes facing forward and 2 toes facing backward 3. Possess a strong beak that is constantly growing 4. Renowned for their ability to mimic sounds and words
