Rally is very popular sport in many European countries (UK, France, Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Poland, etc.). In 1953 started the first personal Rally European Championship and in 1972 – the first Rally World Championship.
It is believed that as a form of automotive competition, the rally came about in the late XIX - early XX century. Start of rally history is considered to be 22 July 1894. That's when the first official competition rally Paris-Rouen-Paris.
Curiously, the very idea of collecting motorists (in English the word "rally", but in French - "rallier", mean the gathering, association) originated in an old car club Monaco in 1890. But such an event took place only in January 1911, and is rightly considered the founder of the rally "with a stellar collection" when competitors start from different places and the first drive on different roads, and the last part of the course are shared. It was the first major international competition in rally called "Rally Monte Carlo".
Below there are unique photos taken on various automotive competition at the period: late XIX - early XX century.
Enjoy.
