Auckland Tall Ships Festival. Part IX

Tall ships festival have been hosted in Auckland over Labour Weekend. Eight ships and over 600 sailors, participating in tall ships festivals in Melbourne and Sydney, crossed the Tasman for a three-day festival which was hosted by Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum.

On Friday 25th October eight ships, led by Spirit of New Zealand sailed into Auckland Harbour. After crossing the Waitemata Harbour these beautiful boats guided into their berths at Queens & Princes Wharves.

About 170,000 people have been touring the vessels as part of the Auckland Tall Ships Festival.

"We've never had an armada of vessels like this ever before, since the 17th century" sayed Tall Ships Festival director John Lister.

The ships have just completed the Trans-Tasman Tall Ships race from Sydney to the Bay of Islands, in which the Spirit of New Zealand placed third.

The ships were open to the public during two days, after that the fleet departed with a full naval salute from Orakei Wharf on Monday.
The ships are:
The three-masted barquentine Spirit of New Zealand, New Zealand.

The brigantine Young Endeavour, Australia

The three-masted barque Lord Nelson, United Kingdom.

180 foot three-masted barque Picton Castle, Canada.

The three-masted bark Europa, Netherlands.

The three-masted topsail schooner ‘Oosterschelde’, Netherlands.

Herring drifter (Logger) Tecla, Netherlands.

Gaff rigged tops’l schooner R Tucker Thompson, New Zealand.

Wooden sailing ship Breeze, New Zealand.

Enjoy our photos of those beautiful ships: their arrivals, on-board facilities, equipment, chart rooms, etc. And finally – watch their spectacular departure.
