Saharan cheetah – unique predator.

Saharan cheetah – unique predator.

What do you think, are there any big animals on the Earth, has not yet been studied by scientists? Yes, there is still unique fauna that never catches the eye of man. We are talking about Saharan cheetah, very rare desert predator. About existence of them zoologists learned only two years ago. The Saharan cheetah is one of the most rare and little-known animals of Africa.

Saharan cheetahs exist at incredibly low densities and require vast areas for their conservation. Now in the world there are only 250 individuals Saharan cheetah or even fewer. And really almost nothing so far is known about this animal – their behaviour, etc. As a result of research zoologists found that Saharan cheetahs took an unusual niche in the animal world of deserts.

The known facts are:
The Saharan cheetah is living desert environments; in North and West Africa. The animal is more nocturnal, more wide-ranging and occur at lower densities than other cheetahs living in Africa.

In most sultry heat, when the activity of their victims is minimal, they go on the hunt. In this case, the Saharan cheetah hunts in the traditional manner of cheetahs. At the final stage of the attack they accelerate: they make a fastest run at a distance of 400 meters, running it for no more than 20 seconds. Their prey - addax, gazelles and Barbary sheep... Despite such active lifestyle, the Saharan cheetah only drink a little water - scientists do not fully understand how the animals do it.

Photo-shoot on the Saharan cheetah scientists made in the deserts of Niger. According to preliminary estimates of researchers, contains a total of about ten individuals there.

Remote infrared camera traps were used in Ahaggar Cultural Park, Algeria, and captured the only close-up photographs ever taken of the Saharan cheetah.

Researchers hope that the Saharan cheetahs will survive, unlike many other Algerian desert animals. The most possible threats for the animals are climate change and human activities.

The largest threat to their survival is the lack of suitable prey due to overuse and poaching. They are also victims of locals, trying to protect their herd of camels and goats from these predators. The researchers have therefore made it a priority to protect the areas where the cheetah and their natural prey reside.

We hope that the few remaining Saharan Cheetahs will not only survive, but increase in the population.
