Auckland is one of the Volvo Ocean Race’s most legendary stopovers. It is New Zealand’s most populous city –the City of Sails.
Auckland first featured Volvo Ocean Race in the second race in 1977-78. It’s only been missing from two editions since then. The In-Port Race will be on March 14, with the fifth leg to Itajai starting on March 15, 2015.
Auckland Viaduct will be transformed into a vibrant Race Village for the Stopover with the Viaduct Events Centre acting as Race HQ. The interactive Volvo Ocean Race Experience Zone offers unique insight into life onboard during the Race with the cross section of the VO65, the 'Another Day at the Office' Dome, and much, much more.
Look at those photos of Auckland Viaduct Events Centre, Americas Cup Village, Princess Wharf. And also – my archive photos from the previous Volvo Ocean Race (Auckland Stopover ) which took place in 2012. Te Wero Island will be the entertainment hub with a packed programme of events on the big stage from 9am to 9pm every day, large screens, live music plus concept bars. The Viaduct Events Centre will house the Boatyard, Race Management and the Media Centre. Visitors to the Viaduct Events Centre will enjoy a bustling dockside environment with the moored Volvo Ocean 65’s (VO65) fleet as a backdrop. The ground floor of the Viaducts Event Centre will house the Boatyard, where maintenance on the VO65 boats will be carried out after the finish of Leg 4.
Karanga Plaza, with steps down to the water's edge, will be the west entrance into the Race Village, giving direct access to the Viaduct Events Centre, Pit Lane and the Team Bases. And there’ll be a top quality range of stalls, public eateries and family activities there too.
Pit Lane will showcase the Volvo Ocean 65 fleet, the most advanced monohull race boats in the world, moored in front of the Viaduct Events Centre. Visitors to Pit Lane will be able to view the boats up close and watch the crews prepare the boats for the next gruelling leg round Cape Horn to Itajai, Brazil.
