Auckland Viaduct now became Volvo Team’s Racing Academy for 32 young sailors (ages 11-15) from 8 clubs/regions of New Zealand.
The Volvo Ocean Race organisers are running an optimist based Team Racing clinic and a three day (Friday to Sunday) ISAF Team Racing Umpires Clinic.
The Volvo Ocean Race Academy goals include:
• Help to improve tomorrow’s sailing hero’s by developing sailing skills in a two day Team Racing clinic
• Integrate the Team racing sailors into the VOR
• Increase the level of umpiring.
• The Academy began Friday at 10:30 am in the Volvo Pavilion for training and coaching sessions and runs through to today when there will be a racing final series.
Katie Hearsum, the Academy Youth Sailing Coordinator, said she wants to ensure the kids leave with big smiles having learned some new sailing tactics and be better team racers.
The Volvo Ocean Race brings 21 Optimists for use in the Academy at each Stopover. The Optimist boat was selected for the Academy because of its common worldwide use and reputation for growing professional sailors.
Today (Saturday 7 March) they have had training by sailing on the north side of the Viaduct Events Center.
The competition will start tomorrow when the teams will fight for line honours and a gold medal. Prize giving will begin at 4:00pm when each participating sailor will be awarded a medal.
Tomorrow, on Sunday 9 March will be:
10:45 - Young sailors parade - in the style of the In-Port Race
11:00 - Sailing
